Live updates: Air strikes continue after Hamas attack on Israel, hundreds killed

More than 250 bodies are said to have been found at the site of a music festival where dancers were taken by surprise by Hamas gunmen during the early stages of the attack into Israeli territory at the weekend.

More than 35 hours after the unprecedented attack, more than 700 Israelis are known to have been killed in the fighting or from rocket strikes from Gaza, and more than 400 people have been killed in retaliatory air strikes by Israeli forces into Gaza. Thousands have been wounded on both sides, and both have confirmed that many Israelis were taken hostage by Hamas.

Car wrecks, some burned or overturned, and discarded clothing line the roads near the Supernova Festival. People have described scenes of chaos and violence as Hamas attackers worked their way through the site, shooting, while festival-goers tried to flee.

Search and rescue organisation Zaka said they removed more than 250 bodies from the site, in the desert near the border with the Gaza Strip.

In New York, both Palestinian and Israeli representatives are speaking to the UN Security Council in a closed-door meeting about the escalating Israeli-Gaza conflict.

In many cities around the world demonstrators have staged protests, in support of either Israel or Palestinians, with the groups at times coming face to face.

Citizens of France, Cambodia, Nepal, Thailand, Ukraine and the UK have been confirmed killed in the conflict, and far North of Gaza, fighting is also taking place between Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in the contested Shebaa Farms area.
