Amazon goes with Mercury for renewable energy

Amazon will buy wind farm generated power from Mercury under a new deal announced today.

Power from the 103 megawatt Turitea South will be used to power the upcoming Amazon Web Services (AWS) region in Auckland which is scheduled to launch next year.

AWS country manager for commercial operations in New Zealand, Tiffany Bloomquist, said the cloud giant’s customers and partners expect it demonstrate commitment to sustainability.

“… transitioning to renewable energy is one of the highest impact ways to immediately lower emissions,” Bloomquist said.

The Turitea South wind farm is expected to generate 370 gigawatt hours of energy per year.

Amazon will buy around half of the renewable energy generated by Turitea South.

Mercury, an existing AWS customer, is building the Turitea Wind Farm in Manawatu currently, expected to start generation in June this year.

Turitea North will have 33 turbines, and Turitea South 27.

Amazon is a co-founder of The Climate Pledge and has commited to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

In Australia, Amazon has embarked on two solar power facilities and a wind farm, as part of its renewable energy generation programme.
