Waikato Expressway crash: Police thank people who gave CPR to victim

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on the Waikato Expressway, Hampton Downs reported around 12:05pm. Two vehicles are believed to have been involved.
Initial indications suggest there are serious injuries.
The northbound lane is blocked, and diversions are being put in place at the Rodda Road on-ramp and Hampton Downs off-ramp.  Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Police are thanking members of the public who helped after a fatal crash on the Waikato Expressway, including performing CPR on the victim.

A person was killed in the crash near Hampton Downs on Friday.

Police said a black SUV was travelling north during a period of heavy rain when it rear-ended a northbound truck and trailer.

One of the car’s occupants got out and was struck by another vehicle travelling in the southbound lane.

Despite desperate attempts to save them, the person died at the scene.

Police on Sunday appealed to any witnesses to the crash to come forward, as their information “could provide valuable assistance to the crash investigation”.

That included dash-cam footage, police said.

“If you saw the black SUV prior to the crash, or have any information that could assist Police with our investigation, please contact us either by calling 105 or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 (and using) ‘Update Report’, sergeant Steven Jones said.

“If you have video footage, please provide an email address and Police will forward a link to simply and safely upload video from your device.”

Information could also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting file number 240614/9960.
