Niue’s Edwards elected to international powerlifting body

Niue’s Tony Edwards has been elected and admitted into the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Board, at its General Assembly in Lithuania on Thursday (NZ time), as the new President of the Oceania Region.

He will represent the 14 member countries in Oceania and is the first Pacific Islanders to be elected as an IPF board member.

Edwards says he appreciates being elected as a Board Member for IPF and as a rep for Oceania.

“I am very appreciative to be elected as a Board Member for IPF,” he said.

“I travelled here to represent the Oceania Region and more humble now to be elected as a Board Member. I am thankful that I have the support from the ORPF and my humble Niue Powerlifting Federation in this journey.”

Edwards is no stranger in the Oceania Region.

He had officiated at the Pacific Games last year in the Solomon islands and is president of the Niue Powerlifting Federation.

Federation secretary Sidney Lui said they were proud and humbled at the same time to see their president elected to the Board.

“This is another massive achievement for the Niue Powerlifting Federation, a small federation who started from scratch and has excelled so much ib the management of the sport,” she said.

Edwards will now also officiate at the Powerlifting World Championships happening in Lithuania this week.
